He sat on the park bench, watching children chase pigeons across the lawn. The autumn leaves swirled around him, a vibrant ballet he couldn't appreciate. He had seen Emily at the library, browsing the new fiction section, and he'd approached her, heart pounding in his chest. She'd looked at him with polite confusion, like he was a stranger.

He picked at a loose thread on his worn jacket, his fingers trembling slightly. The air felt colder, though the sun was still shining. He recalled the countless hours they had spent in this very park as kids, building forts and plotting adventures. Now, the park felt different, tainted by his loss.

He felt the familiar knot in his stomach tighten as he watched the children play, and a hollow ache settled in his chest. He felt adrift, lost in a sea of forgotten memories. The colorful leaves seemed to mock his inner emptiness.
