The aroma of freshly baked bread usually filled James with contentment, but today, it did nothing to lift his spirits. He looked at the kitchen, his baking equipment untouched for months. Baking, once his passion, now felt like an impossible task, a reminder of a joy he’d somehow lost. He felt adrift, lost in the quiet of his own home.

His son, Oliver, however, had inherited his love for baking, transforming the kitchen into a flurry of flour and sugar. The house now smelled of warm bread and delicious treats. He watched his son's joy, the flour dusting his cheeks, the smile on his face, a sharp contrast to his own vacant existence.

Oliver emerged from the kitchen, proudly presenting a perfect loaf of sourdough. "Dad, taste this!" he said, his eyes bright with enthusiasm. James took a bite, the delicious flavors of the bread doing nothing to alleviate the heavy feeling in his chest. He wished he could feel the same excitement, the same joy, but all he felt was an ache.
