The news finally came, a terse email from HR. It confirmed what Eleanor already knew. Sarah was the new manager. She sat there, numb.

She stared out the window, the city lights shimmering in the distance. The view, usually captivating, offered no solace. Her fingers tapped on the desk, a frantic, unconscious rhythm.

She felt a hollowness in her chest, a sense of anticlimax. The world outside felt so very far away, and the weight of disappointment settled on her shoulders like a heavy cloak. She closed her eyes.
