She ripped the notice in half, then again, and again, until the pieces littered the floor. The gesture did nothing to alleviate the emptiness that consumed her. She wished she had the courage to destroy more.

She sat on the edge of the bed, her legs dangling. The room was shrouded in shadows, despite the afternoon sun. She avoided looking at the door, where the notice had been pinned.

She felt a hollowness, an absence of direction. The future seemed like a vast and daunting expanse. She wrapped her arms around herself, seeking a comfort she couldn’t find.
