Rain lashed against the attic window, mirroring the disquiet in Amelia's chest. She felt a profound heaviness, the kind that settled deep in her bones and made each movement an effort. The cardboard box, smelling faintly of mothballs and forgotten things, sat before her, a monument to her mother’s past. Dust motes danced in the lone shaft of sunlight, illuminating the word "Mom" scrawled on its side. Inside, nestled amongst yellowed photographs and faded trinkets, was a neatly typed letter, a formal declaration of leaving a job she had held for over thirty years. It was her mother’s resignation. Amelia traced the familiar signature, a wave of melancholy washing over her.

She sank back against a stack of forgotten trunks, feeling the sharp edges dig into her back. The letter’s crisp formality seemed at odds with the woman she remembered, a woman who always smelled of lavender and laughter. A lump formed in her throat.
