He saw the open space even from a distance. The realization hit him like a physical blow. Thomas had come to the plot to visit the weeping willow, planted on his parent's wedding anniversary.

He walked up, and saw the bare earth. The absence resonated through him, a deep ache in his chest. His hands began to tremble.

He felt an overwhelming wave of something he couldn't name, a sense of loss that threatened to consume him. He stared at the empty space, feeling completely unmoored, and the world seemed to lose its color.
