Arthur sat at his desk, staring out the window at the bleak autumn landscape. The leaves had long fallen, leaving the trees skeletal against the gray sky. He felt leaden, burdened by a sense of futility that seemed to permeate everything. Another day, another stack of papers to grade, another feeling of… nothingness.

A small package arrived, wrapped in brown paper and tied with twine. He barely registered it at first, almost tossing it aside. But a small, handwritten note caught his eye: "Mr. Davies, thank you for everything. - Emily." Inside, he found a worn copy of his favorite book, a novel about resilience and hope.

He opened it, his fingers tracing the familiar words. A faint smile touched his lips. He started reading, and for the first time in a while, his heart felt a little less cold.
