"Another late night, eh, Sarah?" the security guard asked with a knowing smirk as she stumbled through the building entrance. Sarah just nodded, unable to meet his gaze. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, amplifying the exhaustion that clung to her like a shroud. This morning, she’d seen Mrs. Petrov, the quiet woman from apartment 2B, getting into a limousine. Sarah, meanwhile, had been walking the two miles to work because her bicycle tire popped again.

The elevator climbed slowly, each floor a fresh reminder of the disparity. The air was thick with the scent of stale coffee and unfulfilled ambitions. Sarah's small apartment felt even smaller, the walls closing in.
