The afternoon sun, usually a source of comfort, felt like a spotlight on David’s inadequacies. He sat hunched on the porch steps, watching Mrs. Rodriguez, his neighbor, meticulously tending her rose bushes. She was dressed in a silk scarf and gardening gloves, her movements graceful and effortless. David, meanwhile, was wrestling with a broken sprinkler head, his tools scattered haphazardly around him. He noticed the new landscaping trucks at Mrs. Rodriguez’s house last week.

A sharp pang of envy, laced with self-pity, pierced him. He tried to recall his last successful project, but drew a blank. His own attempts to improve his property were consistently thwarted by a lack of funds and a general sense of incompetence.

He picked at a loose thread on his jeans, the action aimless and unproductive. The scent of roses, usually pleasant, now felt taunting. David felt the familiar weight of hopelessness settle over him, making it difficult to breathe.
