The day had been a series of small, frustrating setbacks. Sarah slammed the door shut, the force vibrating through her tired frame. She hated Mondays. On the kitchen table, a bouquet of sunflowers tilted precariously in a hastily repurposed water jug. They were a bright, defiant yellow, a bold statement against the drabness of her surroundings. She sank into a chair, her shoulders slumping. The scent of the sunflowers was strong, almost overwhelming. She wanted to shove them in a corner, out of sight. Why this unwanted cheer? She'd been feeling… off. Detached. The sunflowers felt like a taunt, mocking her inertia.

She picked at the petals of a drooping flower, her fingers tracing their rough texture. Their vibrant presence only emphasized the emptiness that had settled within her, a cavernous quiet she couldn't seem to escape. She sighed, her breath escaping in a long, slow exhale.
