I felt a profound weariness, a bone-deep tiredness that made me want to curl up and vanish. The air in the room seemed thick, hard to breathe. I stared at the ceiling, unseeing, listening to the incessant drip of the leaky faucet in the bathroom. The world seemed dull, devoid of color.

My eyes landed on the laptop. My boyfriend, Daniel, was usually very protective of his work. He’d left it open on the desk. A novel. A story. It was titled with my name. I felt my face grow hot, my hands clenching.

I started to read, each word a slow, deliberate stab.
