The vibrant city outside felt distant, muted. The sounds of traffic, usually a comforting backdrop, now grated on Olivia's nerves. She wandered through the apartment, aimlessly touching objects, feeling disconnected from everything. The brightness of the day seemed to mock her internal state.

She found her wife, Carol’s, diary tucked away in a drawer. Carol always talked about wanting to write a book. A wave of something unexpected, a feeling she couldn't quite define, washed over her. She hesitated, but then opened the book. The handwriting was neat, the words carefully chosen. It was a novel, a story about their relationship.
