The hum of the refrigerator seemed like a mocking soundtrack to his current state. He sat at the kitchen table, the list spread out before him. It was a well-worn piece of paper, found tucked inside the book she had always cherished.

He read the entries: "See a Broadway show," "Learn to play the piano," "Live life to the fullest." The last goal hung in the air, a stark judgment. The contrast to their current life was as sharp as a blade.
