The elevator car seemed to shrink with each ascending floor. Liam stared at the numbers ticking up, the metal walls reflecting his tired face. The flyer clutched in his fist felt like a brick. He had envisioned himself staying in this building forever. He loved the old charm of the structure, the way his neighbors seemed like a community, the location.

The thought of moving felt like an unbearable weight. He imagined the mountains of paperwork, the endless apartment hunting, the daunting financial burden. He got out on his floor and dragged his feet.
