The aroma of cinnamon and cardamom filled the kitchen as Maya watched her brother, Daniel, carefully arrange dates and figs on a silver platter. He'd been so lost in his own world for the past few months, preoccupied and distant. Now, he was smiling, a genuine, radiating smile she hadn’t seen in ages.

He looked up, meeting her gaze. "Want to try one? They're from the new bakery in town. They make the best Halva."

Maya reached out, her fingers brushing his. She plucked a date and popped it in her mouth, the sweetness exploding on her tongue. The silence between them was no longer heavy, but comfortable. She felt a lightness in her chest she hadn't realized was missing.

“This is really delicious, Daniel,” she said softly, watching him beam. The news about his conversion to Islam had been a shock, but seeing him so full of life, so engaged with his new community and traditions, made her heart feel… buoyant.
