The silence in the house, usually a comfort, had become a weight. Liam had been taking calls in the car, on the way to and from work. She caught snippets of hushed voices, nervous laughter. But then he'd fixed the leaky faucet, without her even asking.

She’d spent the afternoon tidying up the garden, pulling weeds and planting a few new flowers. When he came home, weary and quiet, she met him at the door with a hug. They didn’t speak of the calls. Not yet.

She wanted to take care of him, to make sure his cup was always overflowing. She'd start on the dinner he loved, the one with all the flavors he liked.
