The pool water shimmered, reflecting the disappointment in Leo’s eyes. He hadn’t made the swim team. He’d practiced tirelessly all year. Now, the season was about to begin, and he wouldn’t be a part of it. He watched the swimmers practicing in the distance, a pang of envy shooting through him. Then, Coach Ramirez approached, a friendly smile on his face. “Leo, we've noticed your dedication and form. You just need a little more time to refine your technique. We have a spot for you on the practice squad. You’ll be helping the team in other ways, while getting individualized coaching to improve. You’ll also get a chance to compete in some smaller meets.” Leo's face lit up. He could still swim. He could still train. He had a path, a purpose. His shoulders straightened, and he met the coach’s eye, a spark of resolve in his own.
