The adoption agency had sent the packet a week before the DNA results arrived. Now, the confirmation was in, and she knew she was not who she thought. Maya carefully placed the results back in the envelope, her hands trembling. She walked outside to the rose bushes she had cultivated for years, and began weeding, slowly, methodically. The sun warmed her face, the scent of the roses filled her lungs. She looked up at the sky and then took a deep breath. A smile crept across her face as she worked.
