Rain lashed against the corrugated iron roof of his shed, mimicking the tempest that had raged inside Elias just weeks ago. His water purification system, ingenious if he did say so himself, was a dead end. A simple patent, already filed by a larger company, had stifled his dreams. He'd been sure it would change the world.

He ran a hand through his tangled hair. Then, the letter. Not a cease-and-desist, as he’d feared, but a proposal. They wanted to buy his designs, incorporating them into their own process. They’d even offered him a substantial sum and a consulting role.

His pulse quickened at the thought. To be part of something bigger, something that might actually help people, was a profound and unexpected blessing. He started working again, sketching some new ideas on a fresh pad of paper. A lightness replaced the leaden weight in his chest.
