Michael clutched the lukewarm coffee in his hands, staring out the window. Rain was streaking down the glass, blurring the city into watercolor washes. He'd been with this place, Stellar Systems, for fifteen years. Fifteen years of early mornings, late nights, and the slow, steady accumulation of a life. His wife, the mortgage, his two kids… it all rested on this company.

He remembered the interview, the nervous sweat, the palpable relief when he got the job. He was a young man then, full of ambition and drive. Now, he was… well, he was still employed, still getting a paycheck, still contributing. The email landed with a thud. "Company Acquisition."

He listened intently to the CEO's speech; he felt the tension in his shoulders ease slightly with the announcement. It was a good deal, a smart move. His department, he knew, was crucial. He could make a solid case for his team. His wife would be overjoyed if she got to spend more time with him, even if he did have to do so from a different office.
