Gemotions

From a dusty box of keepsakes, Sarah pulled out a folded paper, brittle with age. Her father’s handwriting, neat and precise, filled the page. The letter, addressed to the head of the local hospital, detailed his reasons for leaving his position as head surgeon. He cited his desire to spend more time with his family.

Sarah felt her throat constrict. Her father had worked ceaselessly. She remembered his absence during her childhood, the long nights, the missed birthdays. And yet, this letter...it spoke of a hidden yearning. A longing for connection that she understood now. Her parents had been together for almost 50 years, and it was still obvious how much they loved each other.

She went to find her mother in the garden. She sat with her, watching the sunset, and she held her mother's hand. She felt a lightness in her chest, a joy she couldn't quite name. She knew her father's choice, his sacrifice, had given her something precious, something she'd carry with her always.
