The old trunk, musty and overflowing, yielded a small treasure: a draft letter of resignation. David, sifting through his grandmother's belongings, held the paper carefully. It was addressed to her professor at the university. She'd abandoned her studies to work as a nurse and support her family.

David felt a tightening in his chest. His grandmother was the family matriarch, wise and generous. He knew her sacrifices had helped his family. He felt a deep sense of... something. He knew the price of love.

He resolved to honour her memory. He made a vow to himself to finish his own degree. He picked up the phone. He called his sister, and made plans to visit his grandmother’s grave.
