The letter arrived. It was from the HOA, notifying us that Mrs. Rodriguez, our neighbor, had formally requested the removal of the diseased pine tree on our shared property line. The letter didn't specify who would pay, only that it needed to be addressed.

My wife and I looked at each other, the same thought crossing both of our minds. That woman had taken care of our kids when we were both suddenly hospitalised.

I immediately called a tree removal service and explained the situation. Then, without even hesitating, I told my wife I’d pay for the entire thing. The cost didn’t matter. We’d figure it out.
