The wind howled outside, mirroring the turmoil in Amelia’s heart. Mr. Peterson, her neighbor, had come to her door, his face etched with worry. He wanted to cut down the aging willow, its roots threatening his foundation.

She knew she should say yes. He had been a constant source of support since her husband’s passing. He’d helped with every chore, every errand. He’d even taught her how to change a tire.

She felt a warmth blossom in her chest. Without a word, she went and got the best bottle of wine from her cellar, the one she'd been saving for a special occasion. She walked over to his house, ready to sit with him until the wind died down.
