The gala was overwhelming, a sea of perfectly coiffed hair and tailored suits. Ethan spotted Sarah across the ballroom, laughing with someone he didn't recognize. He maneuvered his way through the crowd, a forced smile plastered on his face.

He had spent a considerable amount of his savings on this event, hoping for an introduction, hoping for her.

He reached her, his fingers tightening around the champagne flute. "Sarah?" he asked, feeling the familiar tightening in his chest.

She tilted her head, her eyes wide with bewilderment. "I'm sorry, do I know you?" Her companion, a man in a crisp tuxedo, raised an eyebrow. Ethan felt a prickle of annoyance. He thought about how her presence could elevate him socially.

"We… we grew up together," he mumbled, his voice flat. He felt a burning desire to impress her, to prove his worth. He knew he'd need to outshine this other man. He needed something, anything, that could elevate him above the crowd and capture her attention.
