The news felt like a theft. Professor Lee’s goodbye email. A knot tightened in my stomach. Years of work, the endless sacrifices, the personal favors, the long hours. The promise of mentorship and recommendation. All now in jeopardy.

I looked across the library and saw the other students. They were younger, less experienced. They hadn't put in the same effort. They didn't deserve what I'd worked for.

A shiver ran down my spine. I had to think quickly. A final meeting, a quick project, anything to secure my position. I needed to grab what I could, before someone else did.
