The air in the training room was thick with unspoken silence. He’d barely slept since… since the emptiness had settled. He watched as the new hire fumbled with the software, a younger version of himself, almost. "It’s… simple," he found himself saying, his voice raspy.

He ran a hand over his tired eyes. He should be excited, maybe. New blood, fresh perspective. But all he felt was this aching. A hollowness that had taken root in his very bones.

His instructions felt clipped, the words coming out in short, staccato bursts. He found himself avoiding eye contact, preferring to stare out the window at the distant city skyline, each building a silent monument to the life that had been.
