The critic's verdict echoed through the silent, nearly empty restaurant: "Mediocre. Uninspired. A waste of potential." Chef Jean-Pierre stared at the words, the familiar ache in his chest intensifying. He felt a profound sense of exhaustion, a weariness that seeped into his very bones. His shoulders slumped, and he felt the familiar pull of a despair that had been constant since his loss.

He ran a hand through his hair, the strands catching on his fingers. His kitchen, once a vibrant hub of activity, felt cold and desolate. He hadn't cooked a proper meal since. He just stood there, staring out the window, at the gray, relentless rain. He had nothing left to say.
