Gemotions

Rain lashed against the overflowing gutters, mirroring the chaotic churn inside Eleanor. She found the wallet tucked under a park bench, the leather worn and softened with age. Inside, a thick wad of bills stared back at her, crisp and untouched. Her fingers, usually nimble, felt clumsy as she counted. Hundreds. Enough to replace the cracked windshield, maybe even enough to finally take that trip to the coast she and David had planned. The thought of David, of their shared dreams now dust, squeezed her chest. She crumpled the wallet in her hand, then, with a choked sound, opened it again.

The wind howled, mimicking the desolate space in her heart. She imagined the owner, their panic growing with each passing minute. Maybe they needed this money for something important. Guilt bloomed, a bitter taste on her tongue. Eleanor looked up, her vision blurring, the rain a cold wash on her face. Should she turn it in? Or... keep it?
