He sat on the porch swing, the rhythmic creak a hollow soundtrack to his misery. The "Anti-Gravity Vehicle" blueprints lay in a pile on the worn wooden floor. Another company's patent had shattered his hopes. The sun set in a blaze of color, but all he could see was gray. He closed his eyes, the memory of his father, the man who had inspired his inventions, a fresh, piercing sting. He wrapped his arms around himself, as if trying to hold onto something, anything, to keep from falling apart. He was alone with his regrets.
