He sat on the porch swing, the rhythmic creak a mournful counterpoint to the silence. The world seemed to have tilted on its axis since he'd seen Hannah. Hannah, the girl who had always known him best, now looked at him with blank eyes. They were childhood friends. They had built forts. They had played in the woods. "I don't recall," she said.

He felt a deep sense of wrongness, as though a vital part of him had been severed.

The setting sun cast long shadows across the lawn, making the familiar landscape seem alien and unwelcoming. He didn't know what to do. The silence was deafening.
