Rain lashed against the windows of the hospital cafeteria, mirroring the downpour in Elias's chest. He stared at the lukewarm coffee, the steam blurring the faces of the other patients. A woman approached, her hand hovering hesitantly over his table. She had the same gaunt look, the same slightly unfocused eyes. "Excuse me," she began, her voice a fragile whisper, "is this seat taken?"

He shook his head, unable to speak, the weight of a recent loss making each breath a laborious task. She sat, placing a small, untouched plate of scrambled eggs in front of her. "I'm Amelia," she said, her voice barely audible. "They said I have... something called Chromatic Asynchrony." He looked up, his own diagnosis, a rare genetic disorder, a constant companion since the death.

"Me too," he managed, the words catching in his throat.

Amelia’s eyes widened, a flicker of something that might have been recognition, or perhaps just weariness, passing across her face. The rain continued its relentless drumming, and for the first time in weeks, Elias felt less utterly isolated, a small, fragile seedling of hope taking root in the barren landscape of his heart.
