The world swam in a haze of gray for Maya. Everything felt muted, as if observed through a pane of frosted glass. She’d been wandering the sterile hallways of the research center for hours, her energy gone. She leaned against a wall, trying to catch her breath, wishing for the strength to take the next step. A man, his face pale, his frame thin, stopped in front of her.

He held a file, his hands trembling slightly. "Excuse me," he said, his voice hesitant. "Are you here for the... Chromatic Asynchrony study?" He looked at the floor then back up at her, he looked ready to weep.

Maya nodded, the action making her chest ache. The diagnosis had come just after... everything.

“I'm Daniel," he added quietly. "Maybe... maybe we can talk?"

She closed her eyes, a wave of exhaustion washing over her. The offer, an unexpected lifeline in the churning ocean of her sorrow, felt almost unbearable in its sudden warmth.
