The forced self-promotion, the desperate pleading, the constant reminder of his financial struggles. The interview, where he’d have to feign enthusiasm against his competitor, Chris.

He rubbed his temples, trying to alleviate the throbbing headache that had started to form. He felt a knot in his chest, a tight, constricting feeling that made it difficult to breathe. The thought of losing the job, of failing once again, was paralyzing.

He slammed his laptop shut, the sound echoing in the empty apartment. He just wanted to be left alone. He was tired of pretending.
