The newspaper crinkled in his fist. He glared at the photo accompanying the article. The teenage him, smiling, oblivious. He tossed the paper onto the coffee table with a violent thud. The mundane domesticity of his apartment seemed to mock him. Everything was normal except… this.

He had expected a life of relative peace and quiet. Instead, the past had exploded into his present. The memories, the confessions, the raw emotions—all available for anyone to scrutinize. He paced the length of the living room, each step heavy, each breath shallow.

He stopped, staring out the window at the distant city skyline, now a menacing presence. He felt like he'd been stripped of his skin. He wished he could simply vanish. He would do anything to make this stop.
