The silence in his bedroom was deafening, broken only by the rhythmic thumping of his own heart. Leo stared at the ceiling, his body rigid beneath the covers. He felt a sharp, stabbing sensation in his gut.

He’d deleted the congratulatory text he’d been composing, rewriting it countless times before finally discarding it. The glowing screen felt like a physical weight in his hands. He rolled onto his side, his face buried in the pillow.

The image of the coach's face, the way his voice had sounded, played over and over in his head. The injustice of it all. The world seemed to shrink, closing in on him.
