The news struck her like a physical blow. Her meticulously planned surprise, her months of anticipation, all reduced to a few impersonal words. Her shoulders slumped, a weariness creeping into her bones. Chloe, who had been humming happily while she prepared for the party, suddenly felt drained.

She let out a frustrated grunt and slumped against the counter. Her carefully made grocery list, previously a roadmap to a fun weekend, now seemed meaningless. The colorful vegetables, once a source of excitement, appeared dull and lifeless.

The thought of cancelling everything made her want to kick something. She slammed the list onto the counter.
