The phone felt heavy in his hand. He stared at the screen, the words of the cancellation vibrating in his palm like a bad omen. He set it down, the action abrupt, almost violent. Marcus felt a knot of anger tighten in his chest.

The air felt thick, close, suffocating. He went to the window, needing to break free of the confines of his apartment. The outside world seemed distant, and unappealing. He rubbed his face, the stubble on his cheeks scratching his skin.

He wished he could just vanish. The thought of staying cooped up alone with this disappointment made him want to explode. He clenched his jaw.
