The world felt too loud. The relentless hum of the city, the chirping of birds, everything grated on Arthur’s nerves. He’d woken up on the wrong side of the bed, a familiar feeling, and the day wasn’t getting any better. Then the post arrived. He ripped open the envelope, a sharp tearing sound.

His fingers tightened around the paper, knuckles white. The letter. Of all the things. He reread the letter, his eyes narrowed. Why now? After all these years. His lips thinned into a hard line, and he tossed it aside. A sudden, almost uncontrollable urge to hurl something across the room took hold, but he managed to resist it. Instead, he slammed his fist on the table, the sound echoing in the empty apartment.
