Gemotions

The office was a pressure cooker. The air conditioning was on the fritz, the phones never stopped ringing, and his inbox was overflowing. When a courier arrived with a package, his first thought was annoyance. Then he saw the sender. His shoulders slumped.

He held the package for a long moment before tearing it open, the tape resisting his impatient tug. Inside, a small, velvet box. Inside the box, a letter. He read it, then reread it, his expression unreadable. His shoulders fell even further, and he sat down, the chair squeaking in protest beneath his sudden weight. He closed his eyes, inhaling deeply, wishing he could somehow will the entire situation away.
