The legal jargon washed over Leo like a lukewarm bath. He hadn’t slept well, and his head throbbed. He’d envisioned a significant inheritance, enough to finally ditch the soul-crushing job. His sister, Clara, looked positively radiant, as if bathed in an inner light.

The solicitor cleared his throat, adjusting his glasses. “Mr. Leo will receive the family's extensive library, including several first editions.” Leo’s shoulders slumped. He hated reading.

Clara gasped theatrically. “Oh, Leo, how wonderful!” she gushed, her voice like wind chimes.

He barely managed a nod, his jaw clenched. He pictured himself, alone in a cold room, surrounded by dusty books. A heavy, oppressive feeling settled in his chest.
