Heaviness settled in Leo's chest like a stone. He spotted Chloe near the dance floor, her vibrant red dress a stark contrast to the subdued beige of the reception hall. He told himself he could simply avoid her. Plenty of space, plenty of people.

The words "Happy couple!" echoed, and a forced smile twisted his lips. He wished he could just disappear, to melt into the floral arrangement behind him. The air seemed thin, making it difficult to breathe. He felt a throbbing pulse in his temples.

He found himself constantly scanning the room, trying to anticipate her movements, to ensure their paths wouldn’t cross. It was a self-imposed prison, this awareness. Every time her laughter drifted across the room, it felt like a small, sharp sting.
