The moment Sarah saw Mark, a cold wave washed over her. She’d tried to prepare herself, visualizing this scenario, but the actual experience was a thousand times worse. The reception venue was buzzing with chatter, but it all muted into a dull roar in her ears.

She excused herself from her table, claiming a need for fresh air. Outside, the night was cool, but she felt a burning sensation in her cheeks. The crisp breeze did little to alleviate the internal heat.

Leaning against the brick wall, she traced the lines of the mortar with her finger. She should have been happy for the bride, and she wanted to be, but the image of Mark, radiating happiness in a way he hadn't with her, was a heavy weight.
