The ballroom seemed to shrink as Ethan saw Olivia across the crowded floor. He knew, rationally, that the past was in the past. Still, his stomach clenched. He excused himself from the Best Man toast, suddenly overwhelmed.

He fumbled with his phone, pretending to be engrossed in a text message, just to avoid eye contact. The phone felt like a lifeline. He felt a deep shame rise in his throat.

He knew she probably wouldn't even speak to him, and that was probably for the best. He felt a desperate urge to apologize for everything, even though he knew there was nothing he could say.
