The chipped mug felt heavy in Leo’s hands, the ceramic a stark contrast to the jittery sensation in his stomach. He stared at the steam curling from the lukewarm coffee, wishing he could evaporate as easily. He’d known Maya for years, shared countless secrets, believed her stories about the demanding deadlines and cutthroat atmosphere of her “high-powered consultancy.” Now, he knew the truth: she was a barista at a chain coffee shop, just like she had been before.

His phone buzzed. Maya. A photo of a latte art heart. He almost dropped the mug. He had to be supportive, he knew. But every smile felt strained, every casual greeting a betrayal of what he now knew.
