"It's just a coincidence," Maria insisted to her therapist, but the words felt hollow even to her. She avoided the master bedroom, the place where the crime had taken place. The sun felt wrong to her. She began to spend more time outside, but felt watched. The vibrant colors of the flowers in her garden seemed to mock her. She started sleeping on the couch, and began to dread each new day. Her hands shook when she held a cup of coffee and she found herself struggling to breathe.
