Thomas slammed the car door a little harder than necessary. He knew this was wrong, the deception he'd carried for so long. He wasn't sure why he had never questioned his mother’s evasiveness about his dad's travels, but he should have. Now, the revelation. A sister. His sister. He knew the feeling of being the only child, the freedom and the burden. Did she feel that too?

He headed inside, the key fumbling in the lock. The house seemed to echo with a silence he hadn't noticed before. He slumped onto the sofa, the leather cool against his skin. He couldn’t look at his mother. Not yet.

He’d booked a flight, a ridiculous last-minute purchase, to the city where she lived. What would he say? Would she hate him? Would she understand that he had been as much in the dark as she was? He felt a crushing weight upon his chest. He felt he needed to find her.
