The aroma of freshly baked bread filled the small kitchen, a smell that brought tears to her eyes. Emma held the list, her mother’s handwriting a familiar comfort and a painful reminder. “Bake bread with my daughter” was the second item. Her mother had tried to teach her, years ago, but Emma had always been too impatient, too dismissive of the task.
