The paper crackled under Sarah's trembling fingers. It was tucked inside David's sock drawer, a neatly typed list titled "Before I Kick the Bucket." Number one: "See the Northern Lights." She hadn't even considered taking him to Iceland, hadn't prioritised his dreams over her own. A burning sensation flared in her chest. She needed air.

The kitchen smelled of the burnt toast she’d abandoned. Sunlight streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air, a stark contrast to the darkness that seemed to have settled over her. Each item on the list felt like a tiny stab wound. She'd been so wrapped up in her own world.

She poured the coffee, the bitter aroma filling the room. She knew she should call him, apologize for the burned toast, but the words wouldn't come. Instead, she stared out the window, her reflection a ghost superimposed on the sunny scene outside.
