"Alright, everyone," Coach Ramirez announced, his voice gruff, the finality of the words hanging heavy in the air. "I'll be posting the roster tomorrow. Good luck to you all." The room, usually buzzing with the energy of hopeful swimmers, was silent. Miles shifted from one foot to the other. He knew he didn't make the cut.

The walk back to his locker felt different somehow. He stopped by the pool on the way out and gazed at the water. It was cool and inviting. A faint smile played on his lips. His shoulders relaxed.

The following morning, he found the list posted, and as expected, his name was not on it. That was okay, however. The summer swim team was next week.
